Puppy Training & Socialisation Course:
A puppy course starts every 2 weeks.
Puppies learn extremely quickly. The early weeks are a vital learning period for good communication and life skills, and to ensure confident interactions with other dogs.
So start as soon as you can; for most breeds 8 weeks is the best time to start to gently acclimatize pup to the environment. Certainly don't delay much beyond that point...... the course is designed for puppies between 8 to 14 weeks at start. (Pups can start before their second inoculation, please call to discuss)
(If your pup is outside the age limits, please phone, there will be a suitable class or solution)
The course has indoor and outdoor sessions: -
1 hour per week indoor where they are taught all the useful basics (see below), and particularly how to listen/concentrate when they'd rather play with other pups close by! and...
30 minutes outdoors when they play off lead with the other pups and some carefully chosen older dogs. This is vital! It enables us to see which dogs need help to increase their confidence, and which dogs need to learn they can't charge around knocking everyone over. Although it looks very relaxed and 'sweet', in reality we apply a good deal of knowledge, experience and structure in this very important session ..... without this, the pups can be over whelmed and stressed, or exacerbate "bad" manners. We also practice our general training in this outside session.
Indoor class: A maximum of 6 dogs.
We teach the pup:
• To think their owner is great fun and worth listening to!
• Sit, Down, Stand,
• Wait, Stay, Settle Quietly,
• Come When Called
• Walk On A Loose Lead,
• Not To Jump Up & ‘Mouth’/Bite,
• Be happy with Grooming and Handling.
And we provide Information About Understanding A Puppy & Preventing Problems
The puppy course costs £120, calculated at £10 per hour. (1.5 hours per week x 8 weeks). This can be paid in installments.
and here's a bit of passion: You may well find cheaper locally, but please be choosy - whether you come to us or not. ANYONE can set up as a dog trainer with , little or NO experience, knowledge of learning theory or the needs of differing breeds, NO insurance, NO understanding of stress in dogs or skill in diseminating information. There is NO governing body for dog trainers. Please, please compare not only on cost but on theoretical and practical knowledge and length of experience, accreditation, teaching skills etc etc. The best test is to go and see classes before exposing your pup to them, talk to other clients, vets, ask pertinent questions of the trainer and then make a judgement!! We realise cost is a consideration, especially these days, but saving a few pounds and ending up with a stressed or untrained pup will not be good!
Once the dog has learned the basics, we increase the level of difficulty with Increased Distractions, expect Greater Concentration and use Differing Motivators.
...followed by Advanced Puppy, an outdoor course generally for those who have recently finished puppy course, dealing with all the outside distractions.
